The College and Career Center at Hayward High

The college and Career Room isn’t just about colleges or jobs for a lot of students, but it’s honestly a place to breathe. Sometimes, students walk in not because they’re thinking about applications or scholarships, but because they’re having a rough day and need a safe space.

Some grab a snack and chill with the staff. The room provides college applications, job information and scholarship help. Although, for students who haven’t always had the easiest path, it means more than paperwork. It’s a place where staff are known for supporting students without judgement, reminding them they aren’t “dumb” or “behind”.

“There are times when students might feel like they don’t have a future, but walking out of the College and Career Room room can give them hope again, even if it’s small,” said one student.

Staff members balance encouragement with empathy. They push when needed, but they also know when to just listen. For many students, that makes all the difference. Some might view the College and Career Room as a space for serious students, but in reality, it’s a small escape for anyone. Whether students are working on a work permit researching college or simply recovering from a hard and rough day, it’s a place that helps keep them grounded.

Yes, the College and Career Room is about preparing for the future, but it also helps for students who need a break, a snack, and reminding students that they’re worth something.
