Student Voice: How Do Farmers Really Feel About Spirit Week?

All spaces that hold a community love to hold spirit weeks and events. Whether it be a workplace, middle school, high school, including Hayward High. Spirit weeks allow people to get creative and dress up for themed days, such as one of the most common themes being pajama day. Hayward High has adopted this fun activity for Farmers to show off their school spirit. But how many people actually like spirit week? Many students have shared their different opinions on how spirit week takes place at Hayward High. One of the most frequent comments that Farmers make is that there’s simply too many spirit weeks that get planned throughout the year.

A current Junior shared her sentiments, stating, “I just think that we should have 3 spirit weeks throughout the school year at most, sometimes it feels kinda repetitive… sometimes I don’t even realize we had a spirit week until Friday.” The majority of spirit weeks are centered around major events at Hayward High and holidays. Some of these are Hoco week, Halloween, Winter Break, etc. Now most students enjoy participating during these weeks as it’s when they feel most school spirited.

Another student pointed out that they wish our school had different daily themes. A current senior said, “A lot of the themes end up getting repeated or they’re either specific themes that are too hard to follow or find an outfit for.” That is a general feeling that has been shared around Hayward High, that they would participate more if the themes were something easier that high school students could engage in. However, there are still students that never fail to come up with a creative outfit or costume throughout the week.

Another senior here at Hayward High has made it her mission to go all out every week as it’s her last year being able to participate in spirit weeks. She says, “Even though I wished we had better themes, I still think it’s funny dressing up and talking to teachers while I have crazy face makeup on…I still try to find fun in it and not be lame.” Although there is room for improvement when it comes to our spirit weeks, the majority of students appreciate them, try their best to show out and put on their most creative outfits every time.
